Vienna: A First Visit to Europe’s Best Kept Secret

If there’s one lesson I took away from my very first trip to Vienna, it’s this: four days is not enough. To truly take in the elegance, history, and quiet magic of this city, you need at least five full days—maybe even more. My time there felt like the briefest introduction to a story I wanted to keep reading, but even so, it left a lasting impression.

This was also my first international trip since receiving the Covid-19 vaccination, which added an entirely new dimension to the experience. Beyond the excitement of travel, there were protocols, documents, and health checks to manage along the way. Surprisingly, instead of feeling overwhelming, it all came together seamlessly, and I’d even call it one of the smoothest travel experiences I’ve ever had—largely because we were prepared.

Traveling to Vienna in the New Normal

Flying Austrian Air required KN95 masks, proof of vaccination, or a negative Covid-19 test within 48 hours of departure. The airline made their policies clear, and I felt completely at ease knowing everyone onboard followed the same rules. In fact, KN95 masks were standard everywhere in Austria. Unlike in many other countries, I didn’t see a single cloth or surgical mask—only the higher-grade KN95s. It was reassuring, and it made indoor activities, from museums to cafés, feel much safer.

Whenever possible, we dined outdoors to take advantage of Vienna’s crisp autumn weather. On our way home, we complied with U.S. regulations by getting a Covid-19 test at a local hotel. It was remarkably straightforward: easy sign-up, quick results delivered by email within 24 hours, and the added step of filling out an attestation form for the airline. With everything printed and ready to go, check-ins on both ends of the trip were effortless.

The Reason for Vienna

This journey was more than just a getaway—it was an inspiration trip for my shoe design collaboration with Sarah Flint. Before I left, I teased my destination on Instagram and asked followers to guess. Out of nearly 400 responses, guesses poured in: Paris, London, Milan, even Dubai. But only one person guessed correctly. And honestly, I understand why. Vienna still feels like Europe’s best kept secret.

Flying in, the city greets you with views of the snow-capped Alps—majestic yet delicate as they rise through the clouds. My family heritage includes Swiss, German, English, and Polish roots, so traveling to a German-speaking country carried an extra layer of curiosity for me. It felt distinct from my usual haunts like Paris or Rome, yet it carried the same old-world romance I love: winding cobblestone streets, grand piazzas, café culture, and historic architecture at every turn.

First Impressions

Vienna’s charm is immediate. The city is steeped in pre-war architecture, framed by towering cathedrals, and softened by endless green parks. What struck me most, though, was how pristine everything looked. Perhaps it’s a small detail, but coming from New York City, I couldn’t help but notice—and appreciate—the cleanliness. It set the tone for how cared for the city feels, both by its residents and by history itself.

The Crowd-Sourced Vienna Guide

Before I left, I reached out on Instagram for recommendations—where to eat, what to see, and which neighborhoods to wander. The suggestions came pouring in, and I compiled them into what I like to think of as a “crowd-sourced Vienna guide.” While my short trip barely scratched the surface, here are a few highlights that stood out:

  • Vintage Shopping: Tucked-away boutiques offered treasures that felt like a step back in time. Each piece carried a sense of character and history that made shopping more like storytelling.
  • Dining: Between cozy cafés and elegant restaurants, I quickly understood why food is such an important part of Viennese culture. Outdoor seating made every meal feel like a celebration of both flavors and fresh air.
  • Museums: Vienna’s museums deserve their own trip entirely. From art collections to historic exhibitions, I found myself wishing for several extra days just to absorb it all.

There are so many other spots I didn’t get to, which is why I’m already planning a return. The list is long, and the allure is undeniable.

Why Vienna Belongs on Your List

Vienna may not be the first city people name when you ask about Europe’s great destinations, but that’s part of its magic. It feels both grand and approachable, filled with history yet buzzing with life. The city carries a quiet elegance, the kind you don’t need to search for—it just surrounds you.

For me, Vienna was an invitation to slow down, to look up, and to rediscover the wonder of travel after so much time grounded. It reminded me why I fell in love with Europe in the first place and why exploration—whether through food, fashion, or architecture—feeds the soul.

So, if Vienna isn’t already on your travel list, consider this your nudge to add it. And when you go, give yourself at least five days. Trust me, you’ll need them.
